Salt Lake City to Host Paraclimbing National Championships in June

USA Climbing is proud to announce that Momentum Millcreek in Salt Lake City will host the 2021 Paraclimbing National Championships June 19th-20th.

The Championships will select the US National Team athletes to represent the United States at international events sanctioned by the IFSC. The 2021 Team will be composed of the top three ranked US athletes per gender in each category.

“We’re excited to see our climbing community come back together after a long year apart, and while we’re not looking at a ‘normal’ competition yet, I’m grateful for the work that the team at USA Climbing has done to ensure that competition can continue safely.” said Mo Beck, USA Climbing Paraclimbing Committee Chair. “To the amazing crew at Momentum, we’ll see you soon!”

“It’s an honor to work with USA Climbing to host the upcoming Paraclimbing National Championships,” said Jeff Pedersen, CEO of Momentum Climbing. “This will be Momentum’s first time hosting a paraclimbing event, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome all the athletes to Salt Lake City.”

In the fall of 2020, the IFSC announced their intention to close the gap between IFSC rules and Paralympic Games classification during the 2021 season. USA Climbing will use the classification system outlined in the USA Climbing 2020-21 Rulebook; however, this may result in some competitors who are eligible to compete at USA Climbing Nationals, but not eligible to compete in IFSC competition.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will operate with minimal to no spectators and USA Climbing is working closely with the host facility to organize the competition in line with local health department and CDC guidelines as well as input from the USA Climbing’s Medical Committee. Each athlete will be allowed and encouraged to have an aide for any need for assistance during the competition. Registration will be open at least 30 days prior to the start of competition.
